How Extraction Works

Everything in Mistfall Hunter is a bet against one rule — loot is not yours until you leave with it. This page covers the mechanics of getting out — Soul Trees, Souls of Return, what death actually strips from you, and why the developers say they balance classes around extraction rate rather than kills.

The loop

Drop into the mist. Fight corroded creatures and rival Gyldhunters. Take what you can carry. Get out.

The last step is the one that makes this game different from an ARPG. Loot you are carrying is provisional — it belongs to you only once you have left the map with it. Die on the way out and it is gone, including everything you brought in.

That single rule is what turns every ordinary decision into a wager. One more chest is not free. A fight you could probably win is not free. The question is never “can I beat this” but “can I beat this and still be standing at a Soul Tree afterwards.”

Soul Trees and Souls of Return

Extraction points are not simply standing there waiting for you. You summon one, at a Soul Tree, and summoning consumes a Soul of Return.

This is documented indirectly but unambiguously. In the Known Issues notice published on launch day, the developers described a bug where “repeatedly entering and exiting the area around the Soul Tree while summoning an Extraction Point incorrectly consumes an extra Soul of Return.” That was fixed in the 30 July update. Read for mechanics rather than for the bug, it tells you three things: extraction points are summoned rather than found, Soul Trees are where you summon them, and the summon has a consumable cost that you can run out of.

The practical consequence is that extraction is a resource you manage, not a button you press when you are ready to leave. Wandering in and out of a Soul Tree’s radius while deciding is not a neutral act.

What the developers balance around

There is one line in the community AMA that says more about this game’s design than any patch note:

Mistfall Hunter is an extraction game. Class balance must take the unique characteristics of the extraction genre into account, ensuring that the extraction rate deviation among all classes remains relatively minimal.

Kills are not the target. Extraction rate is. That is why the tier list on this site comes with a warning attached — a class that wins more duels is not automatically a class that gets out with more loot, and the developers are explicitly tuning toward the second thing.

It also explains the shape of the Path of Glory ranked system, where points are deducted only if you fail to extract. Not for dying to a monster, not for a bad fight, not for an empty run. For not getting out.

Solo, trio, and what is not coming

You can enter alone or in a three-player squad. There is no Duo mode, and the developers have been direct that there will not be one in the short term: it would make matchmaking harder to balance and would split the existing player pool, lengthening queues across every mode.

They have left one door open. Asked specifically about Brandrgarde being available for solo play, they said they may open it for a limited time during the season.

Solo and trio are tuned as separate environments rather than as one game with a player-count slider. The developers collect data on each mode separately and make distinct adjustments instead of blanket class changes — which is why the Blackarrow’s launch nerf was framed around its solo performance specifically.

Bots

Some of the Gyldhunters you meet are not players. The developers confirmed bots are a permanent feature, not a population crutch to be removed later: they consider them irreplaceable for easing new players in and for tuning how intense a given match feels. Bot AI improvements are planned but described as a long-term process.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when you die in Mistfall Hunter?

Death strips you of everything you were carrying. To keep what you looted you have to reach an extraction point and leave successfully, which is the central risk of every run.

How do you extract in Mistfall Hunter?

You summon an extraction point at a Soul Tree, which consumes a Soul of Return. A bug in the launch build let repeatedly entering and leaving the area around a Soul Tree consume an extra Soul of Return; it was fixed in the 30 July 2026 update.

What is a Soul of Return?

The consumable spent to summon an extraction point at a Soul Tree. The developers documented it by name when describing a launch bug that consumed one more than it should have.

Can you play Mistfall Hunter solo?

Yes. You can go in alone or group into a three-player squad. The developers have said Duo matchmaking will not be added in the short term because it would split the matchmaking pool and lengthen queues for everyone.

Does class choice change how often you extract?

Not by much, by design. The developers said class balance has to account for the extraction genre specifically, and that they keep the extraction-rate deviation among all classes relatively minimal.

Are there bots in Mistfall Hunter matches?

Yes, and the developers have said they are staying. They consider bots irreplaceable for new players and for adjusting the intensity of combat, and plan to keep improving the bot AI as a long-term process.
