Mercenary
- Sword & Shield
- Hammer
A parry-and-punish bruiser, and the clearest case of a class the developers left alone. They called its data relatively balanced and spent the launch patch on feel and PvE efficiency rather than reining anything in — Sword & Shield leans on Perfect Parry timing, Hammer on charged smashes and stun stacking.
Two ways to trade damage
The Mercenary is the class that wants you to take the hit on purpose. Both stances are described by the developers as high-risk, high-reward, and the launch-window changes went into making that trade feel better rather than safer.
Sword & Shield: attack or absorb
The Sword build is the offensive half, relying on powerful slashes and lunges. Its centrepiece is the Crimson Blade state, which grants damage boosts and strong stacking slashes — the developers credit it with giving the stance both impressive output and excellent pursuit. This is the build for chasing someone down rather than waiting for them.
The Shield build is the defensive half, and it is the one the class is known for. It revolves around landing Perfect Parries to interrupt an enemy’s onslaught and gain buffs from it, then converting that opening into Shield Dashes to pursue and suppress. Perfect Parry’s trigger window was slightly extended at launch, which is a direct buff to the whole build’s reliability.
Worth knowing before you commit to it: the developers were asked in the community AMA whether shields could provide true blocking, and said no — mitigating 100% of incoming damage “would overly reward passive play and make combat incredibly dull.” But they also said they have deliberately left room in the equipment loadout system to build toward an exceptionally high damage-reduction rate while blocking. The ceiling is high; it just is not infinite.
The shield playstyle’s Shockwave Strike talent had its PvE damage increased at launch, and Block Damage Boost — which previously did nothing in PvE — was enabled there too.
Hammer: hold the wind-up or stack the stun
The Charged build is about what you keep while charging. During the wind-up phase you maintain mobility, Super Armor and damage resistance, which means the charge is not the liability it looks like — the developers describe its wide-area attacks and interrupt effects as giving it a massively imposing presence in a fight. You are meant to walk into the scrum mid-charge.
The Stun build is about accumulation. Landing hammer strikes stacks debuffs that eventually trigger stun control, and combined with the high-frequency hits and mobility of the Hammer Spin skill it keeps relentless pressure at close range.
At launch Skullcrusher got improved mid-air steering after a Level 2 charged smash, which reduces the number of times you sail past an enemy instead of landing on them, plus a PvE damage increase. Warhammer Sling’s Level 1 charge hitbox detection was accelerated.
If you are wondering whether the Hammer will eventually be sped up: the developers answered that directly in the AMA. They said they have always intended it to be “relatively slow but possessing devastating power,” and that they will maintain that identity. Adjustments will come from live data, but the slowness is the design, not a bug awaiting a fix.
Why “balanced” is worth something here
In an extraction game where the developers publish which classes were overperforming, the ones they do not mention are informative. The Shadowstrix and the Blackarrow both drew restraint language at launch. The Mercenary drew buffs and quality-of-life fixes.
That does not make it the strongest class this patch. It makes it the one least likely to be different next patch — which, for a class you are investing progression into, is its own argument.

When Karl was down on his luck, he'd often watch the mercenaries' monotonous training sessions at the Drill Yard—they swung their weapons with obvious boredom and constant yawning. Karl mimicked them meticulously but added a fierce ground-smashing dash to his routine. This very move caught the attention of Deputy Orton.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Mercenary good in Mistfall Hunter?
The developers described its overall data as relatively balanced and buffed the PvE efficiency of both stances rather than reducing anything. A class nobody had to nerf is usually a fair pick that stays playable across patches.
Sword & Shield or Hammer for the Mercenary?
Sword & Shield splits into a Sword build built on the Crimson Blade state and a Shield build built on Perfect Parry and Shield Dash. Hammer splits into a Charged build that keeps Super Armor and damage resistance during the wind-up, and a Stun build that stacks debuffs into stun control. Both stances were buffed for PvE in the launch patch.
Can a shield block all damage in Mistfall Hunter?
No. The developers said in the community AMA that letting shields mitigate 100 percent of incoming damage would overly reward passive play, but that they have left room in the equipment loadout system to build toward an exceptionally high damage-reduction rate while blocking.
Does the Mercenary have a steep learning curve?
The developers did not flag it. They named steep learning curves only for the Seer and the Sorcerer. The Mercenary's difficulty comes from timing rather than complexity.
